Dear Church Family,

It’s hard to believe that October is just around the corner. We have had a very busy month! Last Saturday we hosted an open house for the community to come and see our new walk-through food pantry…even though we had hoped for more people, we were able to connect with those who came by. It is no small feat to transform our space and a big thanks goes out to Barb Singelmann for her leadership in making this happen. Jo Gray is a busy bee getting our “Community Clothing Ministry” off the ground.  If you haven’t had a chance to go upstairs and see how the space has been transformed, I encourage you to visit and see. When I think about one of our goals which is to increase community awareness of our church, we certainly are starting to be more visible. As  you visit with neighbors and run into friends at the grocery store or in the bank or wherever to go, please take the time to tell them what our church is doing…we are “A Church on the Move!”  Word of mouth is the best way to spread the news of what we are doing and how others can join in with us in serving others.

Following worship, we will continue our adult education series called “Nooma” and this week the video we will be watching is titled: “LUGGAGE.”

I always keep you in my thoughts and prayers! Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

God’s peace,
Pastor Barbara

Esther 1
1 This happened in the days of Ahasuerus, the same Ahasuerus who ruled over one hundred twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia. In those days when King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne in the citadel of Susa, in the third year of his reign, he gave a banquet for all his officials and ministers. The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and governors of the provinces were present, while he displayed the great wealth of his kingdom and the splendor and pomp of his majesty for many days, one hundred eighty days in all.
When these days were completed, the king gave for all the people present in the citadel of Susa, both great and small, a banquet lasting for seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace. There were white cotton curtains and blue hangings tied with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and marble pillars. There were couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl, and colored stones. Drinks were served in golden goblets, goblets of different kinds, and the royal wine was lavished according to the bounty of the king. Drinking was by flagons, without restraint; for the king had given orders to all the officials of his palace to do as each one desired. Furthermore, Queen Vashti gave a banquet for the women in the palace of King Ahasuerus. 10 On the seventh day, when the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha and Abagtha, Zethar and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who attended him, 11 to bring Queen Vashti before the king, wearing the royal crown, in order to show the peoples and the officials her beauty; for she was fair to behold. 12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command conveyed by the eunuchs. At this the king was enraged, and his anger burned within him.
13 Then the king consulted the sages who knew the laws (for this was the king’s procedure toward all who were versed in law and custom, 14 and those next to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan , the seven officials of Persia and Media, who had access to the king, and sat first in the kingdom): 15 “According to the law, what is to be done to Queen Vashti because she has not performed the command of King Ahasuerus conveyed by the eunuchs?” 16 Then Memucan said in the presence of the king and the officials, “Not only has Queen Vashti done wrong to the king, but also to all the officials and all the peoples who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. 17 For this deed of the queen will be made known to all women, causing them to look with contempt on their husbands, since they will say, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, and she did not come.’ 18 This very day the noble ladies of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s behavior will rebel against the king’s officials, and there will be no end of contempt and wrath! 19 If it pleases the king, let 9 a royal order go out from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes so that it may not be altered, that Vashti is never again to come before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she. 20 So when the decree made by the king is proclaimed throughout all his kingdom, vast as it is, all women will give honor to their husbands, high and low alike.”
21 This advice pleased the king and the officials, and the king did as Memucan proposed; 22 he sent letters to all the royal provinces, to every province in its own script and to every people in its own language, declaring that every man should be master in his own house.

This fall we are starting a sermon series titled, “Faces of Our Faith” and we will be exploring those faithful people who are often bypassed or hidden in scripture.

YOU NEVER KNOW…

This Sunday I will be preaching from the book of Esther.  Now you might think the sermon is about Esther…after all the book is named after her. Well no! The sermon is actually about Queen Vashti. The King Ahasuerus orders Queen Vashti to come before him in the banquet so others can see her great beauty. She refuses to come…and by the way she was having her own separate banquet for the women. Defying a king’s order was not done, the king had to consult the sages on what to do with with Queen Vashti. He decided that an order was to be written that Queen Vashti should never again come before the king. This left the king without a queen! The absence of Queen Vashti led the king in search of a new queen and here is where Esther comes into the picture. Esther was chosen as the new Queen. You never know how God works through people and you never know how the actions of one can have impact the actions of others. Queen Vashti set into motion a cascading effect that saved the lives of many people!

The EGPC food pantry continues to serve our community and our volunteers remain faithful in their service to us. We are committed to adhering to all precautionary measures to ensure no cross-contamination with clients. The Food Pantry Donation drop box always seems to be filled. As you check on your neighbors, please share with them that our food pantry is open and ready to help anyone who needs food!

Food continues to appear in our food box.  Almost daily there is something donated and many times from people we don’t even know! I want to send a special thanks to all those faithful shoppers who each week pick up the special things we need. It is an ongoing blessing to be so graciously supported by your donations and donations from our community.
